Plum Island, located just North of Gloucester and one hour from Boston by car or train, contains homes only on a mile and a half of the northern end - no hotels or high-rises allowed. The remaining 10 miles comprise the pristine Parker Wildlife Reserve --- famous with birders worldwide. The beaches are always wide-open, clean, and welcoming with some life guarded areas during July and August.
Newburyport, 4 miles away across the causeway, is a charming, historic harbor town filled with fine restaurants, bookstores, an independent movie theater, and live music. Day trips can include whale-watching, a day in Boston, LL Bean outlets just over the border in Maine, or a day with the Salem witches. Biking is recommended with many spectacular possibilities.
